General Programme Entry Requirements
Justo Mwale University (JMU) upholds the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA) principles of access, progression, and quality assurance. All applicants must meet the minimum academic requirements prescribed for each qualification level, together with programme‑specific prerequisites where applicable. In all cases, English Language at credit or better is compulsory, as it is the primary language of instruction and assessment at the University.
Postgraduate Programme Entry Requirements
1) Postgraduate Diploma Programs (ZQF Level 8)
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Academic Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree (ZQF Level 7) from a recognized and accredited institution.
- The degree must be in a field relevant to the postgraduate diploma being applied for.
- A minimum classification of credit or better.
- Applicants with a Pass may be considered only with at least two (2) years of relevant professional experience, in line with HEA and ZAQA RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) provisions.
Professional Requirements (Where Applicable)
- For education‑related programs, applicants must hold valid registration with the Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ) or be eligible for registration.
- For ministry‑related programs, applicants must provide a recommendation letter from their church, denomination, or employer.
Additional Requirements
- A detailed curriculum vitae demonstrating relevant experience.
- Two professional or academic reference letters.
- A statement of purpose outlining the applicant’s motivation and professional goals.
- International applicants must provide certified equivalence from ZAQA.
2) Master’s Degree Programs (ZQF Level 9)
Minimum Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Academic Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree with credit or better (ZQF Level 7) in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
- Applicants with a Pass may be admitted only with at least three (3) years of relevant professional experience, subject to RPL assessment in accordance with HEA and ZAQA guidelines.
- For research‑based master’s programs, applicants must demonstrate research competence, such as:
- A research project or dissertation at undergraduate level, or
- Evidence of professional research output.
Professional Requirements (Where Applicable)
- For education‑focused master’s programs, applicants must hold valid TCZ registration.
- For theological or ministry programs, applicants must provide:
- A recommendation letter from their church or employer, and
- Evidence of active ministry involvement.
Additional Requirements
- A curriculum vitae showing relevant academic or professional experience.
- Two reference letters (academic and/or professional).
- A 1–2 page research concept note (for research‑oriented programs).
- A statement of purpose explaining academic interests and career goals.
- International applicants must provide ZAQA equivalence certification.
English Language Proficiency (For all Postgraduate Applicants)
Applicants whose previous studies were not conducted in English must provide proof of English proficiency through:
- A recognised English language test, or
- A letter from the previous institution confirming English as the medium of instruction.

Entry Requirements for Certificate Program
Applicants must possess:
- A Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent, with a minimum of three (3) passes, including English Language at credit or better.
- Mature entry applicants (aged 25 or above) may be considered upon submission of evidence of relevant work experience and successful completion of a JMU-administered aptitude assessment.
Entry Requirements for Diploma Programs
Applicants must possess:
- A Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent, with a minimum of five (5) credits, including English Language.
- Candidates with a relevant Certificate qualification (ZQF Level 4 or 5) from a recognized institution may be admitted with credit transfer, subject to Senate approval.
- Mature entry applicants (aged 25 or above) may be considered with:
- A Grade 12 Certificate with at least three (3) credits, including English Language, and
- Demonstrated relevant work experience in ministry, education, or community service.


Entry Requirements for Bachelor’s Degree Programs
Applicants must possess:
- A Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent, with a minimum of five (5) credits, including English Language, and at least three (3) credits in relevant subjects as determined by the program.
- Applicants with a Diploma (ZQF Level 6) in a related field from a recognized institution may be admitted into Year 2, subject to credit evaluation and Senate approval.
- Mature entry applicants (aged 25 or above) must present:
- A Grade 12 Certificate with at least three (3) credits, including English Language,
- A recognized Diploma or substantial professional experience, and
- Successful completion of the JMU Mature Entry Assessment.
Additional Requirements (Where Applicable)
Depending on the program, applicants may also be required to submit:
• A letter of recommendation from a church, employer, or community leader.
• A personal statement outlining motivation for study.
• Evidence of practical ministry involvement (for theological programs).
• Interviews or aptitude tests, as determined by the Faculty.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
In line with ZAQA guidelines, JMU recognizes formal, non‑formal, and informal learning. Applicants seeking RPL consideration must submit a portfolio of evidence for evaluation in accordance with University policy.
